אברהם אבינו קפץ לאש ומאוד כעס, כי האש לא שרפה אותו ואסור לכעוס. הוא אמר, יש באש משהו לא בסדר, אברהם יצא שבור לחלוטין, למה האש לא שרפה אותי? מה חטאתי? מה פשעתי? למה אני לא ראוי שהאש תשרוף אותי? אני רוצה שהאש תשרוף אותי ואמות במסירות נפש על קידוש השם, לכל הפחות משהו.
אמרו לאברהם, אולי הָרָן עשה כישוף, כי הָרָן היה המשרת של אלוהי האש, הוא היה כומר חשוב מאוד לעבודה זרה. אמרו, אולי הָרָן עשה כישוף ולכן אברהם לא נשרף, אז אמרו, בא נבדוק ונזרוק את הָרָן לאש.
אברהם אבינו נכנס בנורא (באש), הוא רצה להישרף על קידוש השם, הוא אמר, אחרי ששברתי את הפסלים אני רוצה להישרף על קידוש ה'.

הקב"ה אמר, אברהם צריך לרדת לעולם, אבל תבחר את האדם הכי רשע שהוא יוולד לו. תרח הרבה להרשיע, מגדולי יצרני העבודה זרה וכזה רשע עוד לא היה מבריאת העולם (תרח אף בא על אשתו אמתלאי בעודה נדה).
האר"י הקדוש מסביר למה דווקא תרח שהיה הכי רשע יגדל את אברהם אבינו – כי בדיוק נמרוד המלך רואה חלום שבו כוכב אחד בולע 70 כוכבים, הוא שאל את התלמידים מה פירוש החלום?
אמרו לנמרוד: עוד מעט הולך להיוולד בן לתרח והוא יבלע את כל העולם, הוא יבלע את כל הכוכבים – הוא יבלע גם אותך (היה קיטרוג גדול של השטן על הולדת אברהם, לכן הוא היה צריך להיולד במקום טמא).
אמר נמרוד: אני לא מסכים שזה יקרה. הוא לקח את אמתלאי בת כרנבו האישה של תרח, ואיתה הוא לקח את השפחה שלה, הרי היא באה עם השפחה שלה, שתיהן היו בהריון, הן נפקדו באותו היום. נמרוד אמר, אני אחכה פה עד שהיא תלד ושהיא תלד הוא יזרוק את הוָלָד לאש.

אחרי שקיעת החמה ונהיה לילה אברהם ראה ירח, אמר, טוב אולי הירח ניצח את השמש והִשתחוָוה אליו. בבוקר הוא ראה שוב את השמש, שאל, מה קורה כאן? הולך פה מלחמה בין השמש לירח? פעם זה גובר, פעם זה גובר.
אברהם שאל, מי פה המנהיג של כל העולם?
יצאה בת קול ואמרה: אני המנהיג של העולם! אני הקב"ה המנהיג של העולם!!
אז אברהם התחיל לעבוד כשומר על הפסלים. שאל נמרוד את אברהם, אתה סיפרת ללקוחות הפסלים שהפסל ברא את העולם ושברת את הפסל?
אברהם עשה צחוק מהכל, נמרוד אמר, ככה? אני אזרוק אותו לאש! ואז הוא זרק אותו לאש.
פתאום נמרוד ראה שביל שעשה המלאך גבריאל לאברהם בתוך האש, איך שאברהם יוצא מהאש נמרוד מִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה אליו. אמר נמרוד על אברהם, גיליתי עוד אליל, גיליתי אליל חדש. במקום שהיה אומר שאסור עריות, צריך קדושה, צריכים צניעות, לא, נמרוד אומר גיליתי אליל חדש.
ה' אומר אֶל אַבְרָם לֶךְ לְךָ מֵאַרְצְךָ וּמִמּוֹלַדְתְּךָ וּמִבֵּית אָבִיךָ, תברח מפה עשו אותך אליל. אבל כשאברהם יצא מכבשן האש תרח עשה תשובה. אומר הזוהר בפרשת בהר קי"א שאפילו תרח ואמתלאי בת כרנבו אמא של אברהם עשו תשובה.
אמתלאי זרקה את כל הבגדים הלא צנועים שלה. היא הלכה עם מכנסיים ועכשיו שרפה את המכנסיים, הכל היא שרפה, התחילה ללכת עם שמלה ארוכה עד הקרסול.
אפילו האמא וכל הדור חזרו בתשובה, כל הבנות שרפו את הבגדים הלא צנועים שלהן. כי רש"י אומר שבחרן לא היתה שום אישה כשרה.
